Surfboard Shapers
Surfboard shapers; this
is a very sensitive topic in the commercial surfing world.
Why?
Because most recognised shapers and surfboard designers are backed by
the media through one of the big surf companies.
The result of certain surfboard shapers receiving behind the scenes
backing; is simply that the market is flooded with second rate designs,
by poor ignorant ego driven company backed fools. The only loser is
the consumer; itfs very difficult for the average surfer to sort out
the good from the bad. The best way to eliminate the bad shapers is
on the style of board they are producing and promoting. If it is all
about high performance only, then that is a good sign to keep away.
Why? Because, serious high performance surfing, to 98% of surfers is
nothing more than an unattainable a dream.
The majority of surfers
come under the recreational or FUN surfer image (whether they know it
or not) so be very cautious of high performance designed rubbish.
For most surfers, buying one of these boards is like throwing a large
amount of money down the drain. As a consumer you must be honest and
practical about your ability and what you really want from your surfing
experience. That is your best guide to determining which surfboard shapers
produce the right product for you.
Take a good look at the
fun boards, mini mals and retro designs becoming popular once again,
notice that they are all about floatation, yet the designs themselves
may be old. These designs that may float you, yet they have very limited
functionality. Be wary of surfboard shapers churning out retros, as
they are very old designs, most with limited functionality. Although
a step towards being more realistic for most surfers, retro designs
canft compared to a well designed modern, user friendly, fun to ride
surfboard, designed by a reputable independent surfboard shaper.
