Surfboards

Surfboard sales is a contentious topic at best, there are many different surfboards on the market these days.

All or most surfboards have a valid purpose depending on the desired function. Eg Learner, intermediate or advanced performance level surfboards are available.

It is important to decide what surfing level you are at, and then select a surfboard that will suit your needs. Be very careful when getting advice from retail surf shop sales assistants. As reflected by the sales records of how often the wrong surfboard is sold to the wrong customer, surf shop sales assistants have a record of extreme ignorance about surfboard designs.

When ever possible, select a long time reputable surfboard designer/shaper whofs company has a good reputation, deal direct with the surfboard company especially if ordering a custom built board.

Itfs critical that your shaper communicates directly with you, this way nothing is lost in translation from surfer to shaper. Custom building a surfboard can apply across the range of abilities from beginner to advanced, as each level of ability does require a different surfboard. There are also surfboards designed with the emphasis being on one function. Such as longboard nose rider or big wave gun. The nose rider is specifically designed with the emphasis on surfing the front half and nose area of the design, a specialised style in itself. Where as a gun, is for waves in excess of 15 feet, when ridden in small waves this design would feel very stiff and hard to turn.

So as you can see, itfs important to select a surfboard that suits the function you desire.
